Australian Dendritic Opalite Rough Specimens 500g to 2kg Hand Collected Kalgoorlie WA
Natural Rough Australian Dendritic Opalite, Hand Collected Near Kalgoorlie WA, 500g–2kg
Genuine natural dendritic opalite, hand collected over decades of fossicking near Kalgoorlie, Western Australia — drawn from large private barrels and individually selected for each order. Available in generous quantities from 500g up to 2kg, this is exceptional value for collectors, healers, gem cutters and crafters alike.
What Is Natural Opalite? Opalite is an opal-dominated rock (amorphous hydrous silica, SiO₂·nH₂O), formed principally by the alteration of volcanic rock or siliceous sinter. Opal itself formed millions of years ago as silica-rich water flowed into cracks and spaces in the ground, gradually hardening and solidifying over time. Australia produces approximately 97% of the world's opal supply and opal is Australia's national gemstone.
Western Australian opalite is a harder form of opal, prized for its beautiful dendritic branching throughout each specimen.
About Dendritic Opalite: Often confused with dendritic quartz, this is a genuinely rare stone distinguished by its striking tree or fern-like markings — known as dendrites — which appear in grey to black tones through the body of the stone. Natural colours range through white, yellow, green and brown. The specimens offered here are all naturally occurring and hand collected in Australia.
Important — Know What You Are Buying: The name "opalite" is frequently misused in the marketplace. Here is a clear guide:
Natural Dendritic Opalite — what we are offering here — is a genuine natural gemstone with mossy green, lavender or purple primary tones, dark dendritic inclusions and natural translucency to opacity. No two pieces are alike.
Synthetic Opalite — a trade name for man-made opalescent glass, also sold under names including argenon, girasol, sea opal and opal moonstone. This is not a gemstone. It appears blue against dark backgrounds and milky white or peach-pink against light backgrounds. Air bubbles may be visible inside. We do not sell this product.
Natural Opal — a separate and distinct gemstone, also sold in our store. Precious opal includes White Opal, Black Opal, Fire Opal, Jelly Opal and Potch. This listing is for opalite, not opal.

Important Information About Our Gems, Minerals & Fossils
About Our Specimens
All items and gem names are described as accurately as we believe. Please note that many specimens are from our private collection and may be eye-identified rather than gem-tested. While we endeavour to be as honest and accurate as possible, occasional human error may occur in identifying the correct mineral, and we cannot be held accountable for this. We always encourage you to review the images carefully before purchasing.
All photographs are original to the actual item. Any defects or concerns will be clearly noted in the description or shown in the images.
About Our Fossils
Lesley is a fully qualified Gemmologist and teaches both Gemmology and Esoteric Gemmology. However, she is not an expert in fossils. The fossils in our collection have been professionally assessed and the recommended titles have been used to the best of our knowledge. As such, fossil identifications cannot be guaranteed as fully accurate, and any sale is offered on this basis as general information only.
About Our Collection
Many of our pieces come directly from our showroom or our private family collection.
Lesley’s father operated Minex — one of the largest mineral businesses in Australia — with factories around the world and an extensive personal collection. He attended all of the major world gem and mineral shows, bringing back only pieces that were truly special. Many of the treasures in our collection come from this beautiful legacy.
