Opal
At Soul Light Emporium, our Opal Collection carries a story etched by earth, time, and lived experience. As former opal miners, we have walked the fields of Coober Pedy, White Cliffs, Lightning Ridge, Andamooka, and Yowah — personally collecting many of the stones we now offer. Each piece reflects an intimate connection to Australia’s sacred opal lands. From raw, untouched rough opal to handcrafted jewellery shaped with care and reverence, our collection honours both the natural brilliance of the stone and the extraordinary journey it has taken from earth to adornment.
In our hands, opal remains close to its origins. This is more than jewellery — it is heritage, craftsmanship, and the living story of the land.
At Soul Light Emporium, we offer opals with authenticity, integrity, and deep respect for the beauty hidden beneath the surface.
Energetically: Opal is a gemstone of light, creativity, and inspired imagination. Its mesmerising play of colour mirrors the many facets of the soul — symbolising intuition, emotional depth, and inner fire. It encourages authentic expression, heightened awareness, and a vibrant connection between heart and spirit. When worn or carried Opal can show you the true meaning behind others thoughts and actions, in the Johari window it illuminates the section that is known to others and unknown to self bringing this aspect to light and understanding. For this reason (knowing the truth) Opal can sometimes be a little uncomfortable, however on the path of healing it is best to not have personally hidden aspects. After working with Opal - Diamond, Herkimer diamond or Rose Quartz may be necessary to soothe jangled emotions.
Mythology & Historical Lore: Opal has been admired since Roman times, when it symbolised hope and purity. In ancient Rome it was called opalus, meaning “precious stone.” Aboriginal Australian traditions regard opal as sacred, with Dreamtime stories describing it as a gift from the Creator. Throughout history, it has represented light, creativity, and inspiration.
Birthstone: Opal is the modern birthstone for October.
Major Sources: Australia (Coober Pedy, Lightning Ridge, Andamooka, Yowah), Ethiopia, Mexico, Brazil.
Treatment Disclosure: Opal may be treated through sugar‑acid treatment (notably in some Ethiopian material) to darken the body tone. Doublets and triplets (assembled stones) are also common and should be disclosed.
Gemmology & Geological Profile: Opal is a hydrated amorphous silica formed from silica-rich solutions deposited in cavities and fissures. Its play‑of‑colour results from microscopic silica spheres that diffract light. Unlike crystalline quartz, opal lacks a defined crystal structure.
