What Makes Petrified Wood So Special

From the Greek petro meaning “rock” or “stone”, Petrified Wood is literally wood turned to stone — a beautiful and rare fossilised remains of ancient trees and tree-like plants. Through a natural process known as permineralisation, the original organic material has been replaced by minerals (most commonly silicates such as quartz) while perfectly retaining the original structure of the wood.

Unlike most fossils, which are impressions or compressions, Petrified Wood is a stunning 3-dimensional representation of the original tree. As the wood became buried beneath sediment and protected from oxygen, mineral-rich waters slowly flowed through the plant’s cells — and as the lignin and cellulose gently decayed, a perfect stone mould formed in their place. The result: timeless, ancient beauty held within every piece.

Beautifully Versatile

These lovely specimens can be enjoyed in so many wonderful ways:

🌿 Crystal collections and mineral displays 🌿 Gem cutting and tumbling — perfect for tumblers 🌿 Crystal healing and energy work 🌿 Unique gifts for collectors, students, schools or birthday treats 🌿 Stunning natural feature pieces for the home or sacred space 🌿 Resale opportunities for crystal stores and market stalls

Selection Choices

We will lovingly hand-select pieces from our barrels based on the weight you choose. We often include larger pieces, which can be broken open to reveal even more vibrant interior colours and patterns. (Please always wear full protective safety gear and goggles when breaking stones.)

If you have a preference for colours, sizes or styles, simply leave a note at checkout and we will do our best to make a beautiful selection based on your choices. Please note that the outer surfaces may appear more weathered, with the most vibrant colours and patterns often revealed when the stones are broken open.

Bringing Out the Beauty

When wet, these stones come alive with stunning colours and natural patterns. To highlight their full beauty, you may gently wet, polish, varnish or hair-lacquer the pieces — or tumble them for a beautifully smooth, finished result. Photographs of our specimens are often taken when wet, to give you the truest sense of their natural colours.

Important Information About Our Gems, Minerals & Fossils

 About Our Specimens
All items and gem names are described as accurately as we believe. Please note that many specimens are from our private collection and may be eye-identified rather than gem-tested. While we endeavour to be as honest and accurate as possible, occasional human error may occur in identifying the correct mineral, and we cannot be held accountable for this. We always encourage you to review the images carefully before purchasing.

All photographs are original to the actual item. Any defects or concerns will be clearly noted in the description or shown in the images.

 About Our Fossils

Lesley is a fully qualified Gemmologist and teaches both Gemmology and Esoteric Gemmology. However, she is not an expert in fossils. The fossils in our collection have been professionally assessed and the recommended titles have been used to the best of our knowledge. As such, fossil identifications cannot be guaranteed as fully accurate, and any sale is offered on this basis as general information only.

 About Our Collection
Many of our pieces come directly from our showroom or our private family collection.

Lesley’s father operated Minex — one of the largest mineral businesses in Australia — with factories around the world and an extensive personal collection. He attended all of the major world gem and mineral shows, bringing back only pieces that were truly special. Many of the treasures in our collection come from this beautiful legacy.

 About Our Images
